Albares visits Algeria this Monday to close the diplomatic crisis in the Sahara


The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation will visit Algiers this Monday, February 12, invited by his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf.

With the trip, José Manuel Albares will try to stage the end of the Open crisis in March 2022when the Government of Abdelmadjid Tebboune retired the then head of his legation in MadridSaid Moussi, in protest at the support provided by the Spanish Executive to the Morocco’s plan for the Sahara.

On November 14, the Council of Ministers approved the proposal to grant approval for head of foreign missionrequested by Algeria, for the diplomat Abdelfetah Daghmoum, who already worked at the Algerian Embassy in the Spanish capital.

From the first moment, Albares defended that Spain “has not taken any measure that affects Algeria or Algerian citizens”which is why he advocated for “dialogue, that diplomatic relations be redirected, and that we have with Algeria the relations that we have with all our neighbors, and that they are not mutually exclusive.”

The minister has insisted at all times that Algeria is a friendly countryand that Spain always has its hand extended to Algeria to maintain and develop the close relations of neighborliness and cooperation between the two countries.

Progressive improvement

Air connections between both countries have begun to normalizeand there are already 25 weekly frequencies operated by European and Algerian companies between Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Alicante, Palma) and Algeria, with three additional frequencies planned for the coming days.

Likewise, the trade restrictions that Algiers imposed have begun to be lifted, and in this regard, on January 14, the Spanish exports of poultry productsand on February 5th those of red meat.
