Canary Islands, pending Madrid approval of the cost of the express energy contest

«The work on the part of the Canary Islands is completely done». This was confirmed this Monday by the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Hernández Zapata, about the express tender for additional energy to solve the energy emergency in which the Canary Islands have been immersed for six months now.

Zapata revealed that the so-called energy emergency contest is already in one of its final phases. «Once the proposals have been sent by the General Directorate of Energy to the Ministry, all that remains is for he accepts the proposed cost for them». The head of the area indicated that they have transferred and transferred that proposal to the Ministry and that they even hope that «soon we can get an answer».

Furthermore, he clarified that the communication with the Ministry has been constant throughout this process. “We have worked on everything in coordination with the Ministry itself and now they are in the analysis phase of the proposal that we have transferred to them from the Canary Islands.”

The need for this competition became evident after the blackout general suffered on the island of La Gomera last July and the subsequent declaration of an Energy Emergency in early October.

Selection process

After a start in which there were 33 proposals presented by 15 companies, in February the Government of the Canary Islands reduced the number of projects with the possibility of winning the contest called to 15.

In recent weeks there has been speculation that this figure has already been reduced to two, both large national energy-related companies.

The counselor announced at the time that it will only be possible to act on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura since they are the only three islands where the system operator has detected that there is a coverage gap for the guarantee of supply. It should be remembered that a Red Eléctrica report in 2021 already warned of this situation.
