Energy price brakes: Robert Habeck warns of rising energy prices after the budget verdict

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) fears that the Federal Constitutional Court’s ruling on the supplementary budget will also have an impact on energy price brakes. The Karlsruhe ruling only applies to the climate and transformation fund, he said on Deutschlandfunk. In the reasons for the judgment, however, the court referred to “basically all funds that were set up and that are over the year”.
As a result, this could mean that “citizens will receive higher electricity and possibly higher gas prices,” said Habeck. Habeck sees the Union as responsible for this. This had sued against the reallocation of funds. “If we get into a crisis, we will no longer be able to apply the brakes on gas and electricity prices,” said Habeck.
The price caps for electricity and gas are valid until the end of March 2024. They cap the price of electricity at 40 cents and that Gas prices at 12 cents per kilowatt hour. Since the current market prices are now significantly lower, the caps are currently not in effect.
