If a retiree fasts with menemen, nearly half of his salary is lost.

While retirees are waiting for an increase in their salaries and bonuses, the month of Ramadan has arrived. The lavish tables of the past have to give way to much more modest tables.

According to CHP Manisa Deputy Bekir Başevirgen, if a retiree consumes only menemen at sahur and iftar, 4 thousand liras will be out of his pocket.

Making a written assessment of the situation of retirees trying to hold on to life against the high cost of living, Başevirgen noted the following:

MORE THAN 700 PERCENT INCREASE IN 3.5 YEARS

In 2024, which President Erdoğan declared as the ‘year of retirees’, our retirees were the ones most affected by the economic crisis. In the face of inflation, retirees’ income is decreasing day by day, and poverty is increasing day by day. As the month of Ramadan approaches, our retirees started to think about what they will put on the table for iftar and sahur.

In September 2021, when Turkey entered a period of high inflation, the price of a food basket consisting of basic products purchased for 100 lira rose to 755 lira in February 2024.

“THEY ONLY EAT MENEMEN…”

The price per kilogram of olives, which are primarily consumed to break the fast at iftar, was 160 lira in August, while today it is 390 lira. Date prices in the market vary between 100 lira and 500 lira depending on their quality. 250 grams of Ramadan pita is determined as 15 lira in some provinces. If retirees want to make a modest menemen for iftar, they have to pay at least 65 lira from their pockets.

If they only eat menemen for iftar and sahur during Ramadan, their monthly cost is close to 4 thousand liras. Those who can put red meat on their tables during Ramadan with their pensions of 10 thousand liras need to spend at least 260 liras for a meal of Izmir meatballs. Those who cannot eat red meat have to spend at least 210 lira if they want to eat sautéed chicken for iftar.

GERMAN BUYS 242 KIGS OF MINCED BEEF, TURKISH BUYS 25 KILO

While retirees and low-income people are forced to tighten their belts, the pension in Germany, where the government claims to be jealous of us, is 1,700 Euros. In our country, the minimum pension of 10 thousand liras is 298 Euros. While a German can buy 242 kilos of minced meat with his pension, our retirees can only buy 25 kilos of minced meat for an average of 400 liras per kilo.

“NOW KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE PENSIONERS’ POCKETS”

The government even considers hunger as high with the 10 thousand lira salary and 3 thousand lira bonus it imposes on retirees. Millions of citizens are surrounded by poverty and hunger. While food prices are constantly increasing, retirees who are crushed under inflation need to work a miracle to survive on 10 thousand liras. We are calling out to the government, take your hands off retirees’ pockets.
