Milan confirms itself at the top of the ranking of Italian municipalities that have recorded the most proceeds from road fines. This was stated by Codacons, which has elaborated the official reporting data that local authorities must provide to the Ministry of the Interior by 31 May of each year. Collections from fines in 2022 grew by 37% to 547 million.
Road fines: the ranking with Milan in the lead for collections
With over 151.5 million euros in revenues in 2022, Milan is the Italian city that earns the most thanks to penalties for violations of the Highway Code. In second place in the standings is Roma, with 133 million euros; far more detached are Florence (46 million euros), Bologna (43 million) and Turin (about 40 million). Among the capitals that instead record the lowest proceeds are Catanzaro, with just over 812 thousand euros collected in 2022, and Aosta (917 thousand euros). Campobasso is missing, a municipality whose reporting was not published on the Ministry’s website by 31 May.
Where they grow the most: Power + 224%
The consumer association then compared the collections of 2021 with those of last year. Potenza is the city that has seen the revenues grow the most, going from 1.1 million euros in 2021 to 3.7 million last year, an increase of 224%. Followed by Palermo (+164%) and Florence (+120%). On the other side of the ranking we find Catanzaro, which collected 8.5% less with fines than in 2021, Naples (-7.6%), Turin (-2.6%).
Traffic fines – says the president of Codacons, Carlo Rienzi – are confirmed as a treasure trove for Italian municipalities, guaranteeing generous income to the coffers of local authorities. The recovery of car circulation after the period of the pandemic certainly had an impact on the sharp increase in fines, but the data show that serious problems remain regarding the use of speed cameras.
