Every third Russian is ready to move to another city for the sake of a career, as evidenced by a survey of the Avito Work service.
The number of respondents whom even a very favorable offer cannot force to change their place of residence has decreased. Back in the fall of 2023, there were more than half of them, now – 47%. Men are more willing than women to agree to move to another region where they were offered a contract, 40% versus 26%, respectively.

The growing personnel mobility is quite understandable, says Artem Kumpel, managing director of Avito Work and Avito Services: “At the beginning of the year, people plan their lives and careers much more actively. The main planning takes place in the first three months of the year.

They have made some plans and understand how they are ready to change anything, so the issue of changing their place of residence is perceived quite calmly at the beginning of the year. If earlier, especially in pre-Covid times, we saw that staff mobility was very low, over the last three years there has been a fairly intense interest of job seekers in additional income.

People are actively moving from region to region, and this trend will continue because borders are blurring. Within large regions, the comfort of life in cities is approximately at the same level, so people look specifically at where to get a more interesting job and high earnings.”

Last year, company leaders, including representatives of the agricultural business, emphasized in an interview with Kommersant FM that it is difficult to persuade workers to move to another region; even more favorable salary offers do not help.

Increasingly, the main motivation for applicants in such cases is career prospects, notes Vladislav Bykhanov, a partner at the recruiting company Cornerstone: “Not only are there jobs in Moscow and St. Petersburg, people are ready to move to Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Vladivostok.

If a candidate writes that he is not ready to move, he cuts off a large number of incoming calls with offers, because the move could be to a neighboring city or place that he would like.

If we talk about moving from a large city to a small one, of course, first of all we are talking about the amount of remuneration. The second aspect is the opportunity for career growth. Sometimes people agree to a similar salary level for a line on their resume, because in the future this line will allow them to receive more interesting offers.

Of course, social aspects are also important – clinics, schools, kindergartens for children. Because, as a rule, candidates with school-age children are the most immobile. They say, they say, my child will go to college, I don’t want to disrupt him, and now we are already going to school. And when children are either small or already live separately, candidates more often agree to move to another city.”

Avito Rabota did not survey company directors and their deputies in its study. Top managers, as a rule, are not ready to move to another city for the sake of a lucrative offer, but there are exceptions here, emphasizes Olga Shcherbakova, managing partner of the executive search company Zoom Executive Search:

“There are industries in which it is very difficult to make a decent career without moving. For example, the oil industry, the mining industry, where in any case you need to go to work on some asset, it is obvious that minerals do not grow inside the Moscow Ring Road. But in general, Russian management is very immobile. While it is still possible to transfer someone to Moscow and St. Petersburg, and even then not always, it is extremely difficult to transfer to some other regions.

We are talking about retail, IT business, automotive industry, top management there, as a rule, these are family people with children. And the level of service and social support that Moscow or St. Petersburg provides is incommensurate with what can be obtained in Tomsk, Omsk or Kolyma.”

At the end of November, the service found out what income Russians expect on average when moving to another city for employment. Respondents are ready to travel to Moscow from the regions if they are paid 130 thousand rubles. per month. In St. Petersburg, survey participants expect a higher salary; they would be satisfied with a salary of 138 thousand rubles.
