Organic farming: More and more German farms are working organically


More and more farms are operating in Germany organic farming. Last year, around 28,700 companies operated according to organic farming standards, the Federal Statistical Office said. That is 10 percent more than three years earlier. In 2020 there were 26,100.

Last year, more than one in ten farms nationwide worked organically. The total number of farms in Germany, however, fell by 7,800 between 2020 and 2023. In 2023 there were 255,000 farms nationwide.

According to statisticians, the area cultivated organically in Germany has increased particularly sharply. While there were 1.6 million hectares in 2020, the area recently increased to 1.85 million hectares. That’s an increase of 16 percent.

Organic farms are getting bigger and bigger
