According to insider information, the French car manufacturer Renault is starting to develop a new edition of the electric Twingo. The launch is expected to take place in April, two people familiar with the matter said Tuesday. According to a third insider, production of the small car is scheduled to start in two years at the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia, where the current generation rolls off the production line. With a model for less than 20,000 euros, Renault wants to position itself against the growing competition from electric car manufacturers from China. The car manufacturer did not comment on the plans. The French are seeking collaborations with other car companies in order to reduce costs with high volumes. At the end of February, Renault announced talks with Volkswagen. According to insiders, these will continue, although the development of prototypes and the selection of suppliers for the Twingo are already beginning at the Renault electric car subsidiary Ampere. VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer said in March that an entry-level electric car should come onto the market by 2027, possibly in collaboration with partners. A decision is expected in the coming months.
