odisha train accidentNew Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Sunday that the real cause of the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district has been identified. The tracks affected by the accident are expected to be restored for normal services by Wednesday. Talking to reporters at the accident site, he said that the cause of the accident was related to the important ‘point machine’ and ‘electronic interlocking’ system for railway signals. Vaishnav said that the change in the ‘electronic interlocking’ which led to the accident has been identified. He denied that the incident had any connection with the ‘Kavach’ system.

Railways is in the process of providing ‘Kavach’ system across its network to prevent accidents due to train collisions. Significantly, the Coromandel Express collided with a goods train parked there near Bahanga Bazar railway station in Balasore at around 7 pm on Friday after entering the loop line instead of the main line. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express also came under the grip of this accident. At least 288 people have died in this accident and more than 1,100 people have been injured.

The Railway Minister said, ‘The investigation into the accident has been completed and all the details will be known as soon as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) gives his report.’ He said, ‘The real reason behind this gruesome incident has been identified… I do not want to talk about it in detail. Let the report come. I would just say that the real reason and the people responsible for it have been identified.

Vaishnav also said that around 300 victims of the train accident have been given compensation. He said, ‘We met patients and doctors at Soro Hospital. Special trains are being run from Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ranchi, Kolkata and other places so that patients can return home after treatment. Talking to reporters at the accident site, Vaishnav said the repair work is being done on a war footing and tracks have already been laid on one of the main lines.

Vaishnav said, ‘We have put all resources to work. I also want to say that the Kavach system has nothing to do with this accident. The accident happened because of a change in the electronic interlocking system. The comment of Mamta Banerjee (Chief Minister of West Bengal) is not correct. He said, ‘The setting of the point machine has been changed. How and why this was done will be disclosed in the inquiry report.

Electric point machine is an important equipment of railway signaling for quick operation and locking of ‘point switch’ and it plays an important role in safe running of trains. Non-functioning of these machines has a serious impact on train operations and inconsistencies in their installation can also lead to unsafe conditions.

The preliminary inquiry report states that the signal ‘was given and train number 12841 (Coromandel Express) was dispatched for the Up main line, but the train entered the Up loop line and collided with a goods train standing on the loop line and Derailed. Meanwhile, Train No. 12864 (Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express) passed on down main line and two of its coaches derailed and overturned.

Vaishnav has been at the accident site since Friday night and is monitoring the efforts to repair the tracks along with rescue and relief operations. He said that the aim of the Railways is to complete the repair work of the tracks by Wednesday. He said that the rescue and relief operations at the accident site have been completed.

Over 1,000 workers are working round the clock to repair the tracks at the earliest. Railways have deployed more than seven poklen machines, two accident relief trains and three to four cranes to restore rail traffic. The repair work of tracks and ‘overhead electric lines’ is in progress. Railways is also running special trains to transport the injured and dead.
