The tourist municipalities of the Canary Islands continue to make progress to make their destinations as sustainable as possible. The Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC), made up of the thirteen municipalities that monopolize the tourist offer of the islands, will develop, together with Telefónica, the initiative ‘Canary Green’ which consists of a series of pilot projects financed with eight million euros from the Next Generation funds of the European Union (EU) to adapt their municipalities to the demands of sustainability.
The vice president of the AMTC and mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, reported that it has been a success for the association to be able to take this first step, attending this call for tourism sustainability plans. In addition, she pointed out that with this project the AMTC will be a pioneer, since never in the history of the Canary Islands have 13 tourist municipalities come together. «The success of this project will give us income to continue applying for future projects and Show that Yeah togetherwe believe in what we do and we bring together all interests the tourist destination of the Canary Islands will do better».
The first half of the project will be done by the end of the year and will be completed in December 2025
For her part, the commercial director of Telefónica in the Canary Islands, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, reported at a press conference that Telefónica is “very happy” to be the winner of this project, which is “an enormous responsibility and a great opportunity” both for the company as well as for the Canary Islands and it will imply «one before and one after» in the application of technology to achieve sustainability.
Four strategic axes
Likewise, he pointed out that this project revolves around four axes of action. Firstly, an analysis of the degree of sustainability of the destination, measuring water qualities, garden irrigation parameters, beach capacity and how these resources are being applied.
In the part dedicated to energy efficiency, the use of smart lighting and charging points for electric vehicles will be implemented, while in the axis called digital transition, an intelligent tourist platform will be created that will allow tourists and also residents Know the carbon footprint you generate and how you can reduce it.
For this purpose, an application will be developed with information on sustainable hotels, restaurants with zero kilometer products, allowing the tourist offer to respond to the objectives pursued by a sustainable and decarbonized destination.
Rodríguez explained that these are actions aimed at achieving sustainable actions, energy efficiency, digital technology and training and awareness to generate safe and decarbonized destinations, and that they will also generate a «quality employment», which revolves around the technology sector. Half of the project should be completed in December of this year, indicated the Telefónica board of directors in the islands.
From the hand of the Ministry
Finally, the Regional Vice-Minister of Tourism, José Manuel Sanabria, explained that this initiative “supports” two strategic lines of the public policies that the Ministry intends to apply, which are lto digitalization and sustainability.
At the same time, he highlighted that it is an “innovative and exemplary” project, so the Ministry will cooperate in advice and supervision, since it encompasses the 13 municipalities with the “most important tourist offer in the Canary Islands.”
To address the actions that will be carried out in each of the municipalities, representatives of the AMTC (Adeje, Antigua, Arona, Guía de Isora, La Oliva, Mogán, Pájara, Puerto de la Cruz, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santiago del Teide, Teguise, Tías and Yaiza) also held a first meeting yesterday, Thursday.
