The first meeting of the Minimum Wage Meeting is today… Workers and employer government are at the same table! How much will the minimum wage be?

While there are only a few days left until the new year, millions of people’s eyes are turned to the new minimum wage. The Minimum Wage Determination Commission will hold its first meeting today regarding the new minimum wage, which concerns approximately more than 7 million people.

At the meeting hosted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the employer side will be represented by the Confederation of Turkish Employer Unions (TİSK), and the worker side will be represented by TÜRK-İŞ, as it is the confederation with the most members.

The head of the employers’ delegation will be TİSK Secretary General Akansel Koç, and the head of the workers’ delegation will be TÜRK-İŞ Deputy Chairman Ramazan Ağar.

THERE WILL BE 4 WORKERS IN THE TURKISH-BUSINESS DELEGATION

In this year’s negotiations, unlike previous years, 4 workers will be included in the 5-person TÜRK-İŞ delegation for the first time. Cashiers, healthcare workers, energy workers and a subcontracted worker working on highways will contribute to the process of determining the new minimum wage this year.

TİSK, which wants the new minimum wage to be determined by the triple agreement of the worker, employer and government this year, is of the opinion that the wage should be balanced and at a level that protects employment and competitiveness. TİSK’s insistence on increasing and continuing minimum wage employer support continues.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT MINIMUM WAGE?

The minimum wage was increased to 11 thousand 402 lira net as of July 1. Minimum wage support was 500 lira.

Demands for the minimum wage before the Minimum Wage Determination Commission meetings:

WILL THE MINIMUM WAGE BE 17 THOUSAND 500 TL?

Asked about the evaluations that the minimum wage should be increased by 53.5 percent, equivalent to 17 thousand 500 liras, in order to prevent employees from losing purchasing power against inflation, Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan said, “I hope we will reach the final result when we finish our work, and we will share it with you.” he replied. Işıkhan also stated that there will be a single increase in the minimum wage and said, “Once a year in our Minimum Wage Regulation. Under very difficult conditions, such as an earthquake… Last year, we increased the minimum wage for the second time upon the instruction of our President.” he said.

TÜRK-İŞ PRESIDENT: THEN WE WILL LEAVE THE TABLE

TÜRK-İŞ President Ergün Atalay said, “If the hunger limit, calculated around 14 thousand TL, is proposed in the minimum wage negotiations,Then we leave the table. “Such a thing cannot happen,” he said. On the other hand, Atalay said, “It came to a point that this wage became a living wage. The Minister says it will happen once this year. Never mind, don’t give a raise or give money. If you were an acrobat, you wouldn’t be able to survive on 11,400 TL for a week. Whatever I said here, I will say the same there. This issue is our issue. 8 million minimum wage is the largest contract in this country. It doesn’t matter to us. They are also our neighbors and friends. We don’t have the luxury of keeping our heads down” he reacted.

DISK: MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE UPDATED FOUR TIMES A YEAR

DİSK Chairman Arzu Çerkezoğlu stated that in high inflation conditions, the minimum wage should be updated not twice, but four times a year. Çerkezoğlu, “The minimum wage should be determined as a wage that the worker can live on with his family, in accordance with all international standards. The rate to be applied to the first tax bracket after the minimum wage should be reduced to 10 percent, tax brackets should be increased, and we, as employees, should be prevented from being moved to a higher tax bracket during the year as if we have become richer. The lowest pension should be increased to at least the minimum wage level. Discriminating between workers in the private sector and public workers is against the principle of equality of the Constitution. Minimum wage should be calculated taking into account the lowest public worker wage and the lowest civil servant salary.” he expressed his demand.

İTO: LET IT BE AS MUCH AS THE TARGET INFLATION

Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Şekib Avdagiç stated that businesses have a serious staff shortage and said: “I do not think that there will be a period of stagnation in layoffs or recruitment in the coming period. The minimum wage should be determined in a way that does not disrupt the balance established by taking into account the current policies and the targeted inflation. In this field, decisions must be made in a way that does not disrupt the balance of the market along with the expectations of the employees.”” he said.

TÜSİAD: SCISSORS IS CLOSING

Tuncay Özilhan, President of the Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TÜSİAD) High Advisory Council (YİK), said: “The idle workforce rate, which we can call the broad unemployment rate, is around 22 percent. The gap between the average wage and the minimum wage is gradually closing. With the decrease in the quality of university education, the wage gap between university and high school graduates is narrowing. In other words, the return on university education is decreasing. On one hand, there is the effort of our hard-working and successful young people, and on the other hand, the unfolding lives of those who stray into illegal ways. As I always repeat, it is not possible without producing. The beginning of everything is production and fair competition. The economy should be formal and rule-based. The competitive environment must work properly. Corruption and black money must be fought effectively” he explained.
