The lack of a clear interlocutor with whom to negotiate makes it difficult to reach an agreement that puts an end to the tractor-trailers and other agrarian protests. The three large organizations in the sector -Asaja, Coag and UPA- have been relegated to the background in the call for mobilizationswhile large owners of agricultural land have taken the lead, with Platform 6F at the forefront.
“Although we can reach an agreement with the Government and call off the strikes, They are already out of control and there is no clear interlocutor with whom to negotiate anything.“says one of the highest representatives of one of the agricultural organizations.
But who is really behind the mobilizations? The protests of recent days, supposedly “independent and spontaneous”, They have a visible head behind them: Lola Guzmán, former Vox militantValencian and from a family of farmers, who at 52 years of age has become one of the leaders of the platform.
Guzmán works as a healthcare worker, but she inherited some citrus farms from her family and has ties to the sector. Her appeals to farmers and ranchers on social media of her uploading videos have gone viral, but make it difficult for the Government to reach an agreement. It is the same thing that happened with the transport strike in 2022.
The convener, the so-called National Platform for the Defense of Transport, was outside of all the large business associations, but the country ended up collapsing and, although the Government did not sit down at any time to negotiate, the mobilization forced the approval of a discount of 20 cents per liter in the price of fuel.
Transportation comes together
The Transport Platform, which brings together thousands of road transporters, both self-employed and SMEs, has now announced its decision to join the farmers’ protests with the call for an indefinite national strike starting today, Saturday, which once again threatens to cause a new collapse in the country.
For now, The Platform intends to cut off traffic and access to Madrid from midnight and throughout the day, which has forced the Government Delegation to coordinate a security device with more than half a thousand agents from the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) of the National Police, known as riot police.
In the midst of a wave of protests, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has censored the attacks on agents of the State Security Forces and Bodies during the mobilizations. And although he has claimed to understand his “concerns”, he has indicated that there are attempts to “manipulate or use them violently”, something that “they do not deserve.”
Siege of the PSOE headquarters
Faced with the possibility of a tractor-trailer in front of the PSOE headquarters in Madrid, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has already warned that “They are not going to allow” road closures to reach the center of Madrid and, more specifically, Ferraz Street. “We are not aware of any type of communication,” said Marlaska during an interview on TVE, when asked about the call by some groups of farmers to access the capital.
For its part, Platform 6-F has called to vote this Saturday on the esplanade of the Metropolitan stadium in Madrid if they paralyze the demonstrations and concentrations of farmers and ranchers or continue with a massive strike. “This Saturday 10F at Avda Luis Aragonés 4 in Madrid, The Spanish people will experience a massive vote by show of hands on whether to paralyze or continue the massive strike“says the message published on his profile on the social network X.
