Tourism: more and more foreign couples are getting married in Italy

Wedding in Italy: it is not the title of a comedy but the trend that is increasingly popular among foreign couples. The number of those choosing the Peninsula with locations to say the fateful yes is increasing, bringing friends and relatives with them. And, consequently, generating a significant impact for the territory.

Destination Wedding

Last year, according to data from Convention Bureau Italythe sector of Destination Wedding in Italy it recorded a turnover growing by 34%going from 600 million in 2022 to 803 in 2023. Overall, the weddings of foreign couples celebrated in Italy in the last 12 months there were over 13,600, 22.3% more than a year ago. And if the majority boast an American passport, recently requests from Australia, Canada, India, China, Mexico, Singapore and Indonesia have increased.

The trend, observers say, is destined to continue into 2024, albeit at a slower pace: the estimated increase for the current year is just over 8%, or 1,200 more events. “There is a desire for Italy all over the world – underlines the Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè – getting married in the Peninsula is becoming a ‘cult’. A distinctive element that recognizes not only the economic but also the cultural status of the family. Those who come to get married in Italy have Italian roots and get married in even lesser-known places, not only in the most famous cities but in the most secret Italy.”

More guests and fewer nights

The number of guests increases, despite a decrease in the number of nights. Compared to 2022, in fact, in 2023 the average number of guests went from 55 to 61: which means that six out of 10 weddings had a guest list of between 51 and 100 people. A result that is probably explained by the return of meetings and social opportunities after the restrictions linked to the pandemic period.

On the other hand, the average stay of spouses and guests is decreasing, going from 3.2 nights to 2.9, a figure which is probably affected by the general increase in prices forinflation.

Overall, arrivals related to the Destination Wedding in 2023 are over 826 thousand, for a total of 2.4 million nights. There average spend per event? Around 59 thousand euros, 10% more than in 2022.
