TÜİK announced the unemployment rate: It was 9.2 percent in the third quarter of 2023

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the third quarter (July – September) Labor Force Statistics of 2023. According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey; The number of unemployed people aged 15 and over decreased by 161 thousand people in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 3 million 218 thousand people. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 points to 9.2 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.5 percent for men and 12.5 percent for women.

Seasonally adjusted employment rate was 48.4 percent

The number of employed people increased by 124 thousand people in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 31 million 724 thousand people, and the employment rate remained unchanged at 48.4 percent. This rate was 65.8 percent for men and 31.4 percent for women.

Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 53.4 percent

In the third quarter of 2023, the workforce decreased by 37 thousand people compared to the previous quarter, reaching 34 million 942 thousand people, and the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.1 point to 53.4 percent. The labor force participation rate was 71.2 percent for men and 35.9 percent for women.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among young people was 17.1 percent

The unemployment rate in the young population, covering the 15-24 age group, was 17.1 percent, with a 0.7 point decrease compared to the previous quarter. Unemployment rate in this age group; It was estimated as 14.2 percent for men and 22.4 percent for women.

58 percent of seasonally adjusted employment was in the service sector

While the seasonally adjusted number of employed people decreased by 226 thousand people in the industrial sector in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter, it increased by 30 thousand people in the agricultural sector, 42 thousand people in the construction sector and 278 thousand people in the service sector. 14.8 percent of those employed were in agriculture, 20.8 percent in industry, 6.4 percent in construction and 58 percent in the service sector.

Adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, the average weekly actual working time was 44.0 hours

The average weekly actual working hours of those who were employed during the reference period, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, decreased by 0.2 hours compared to the previous quarter and reached 44.0 hours in the third quarter of 2023.

Seasonally adjusted idle workforce rate was 22.5 percent

The idle labor force rate, which consists of time-related underemployment, potential labor force and unemployed people, was 22.5 percent in the third quarter of 2023, with a decrease of 0.9 points compared to the previous quarter. While the integrated rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 14.9 percent, the integrated rate of the potential labor force and the unemployed was estimated at 17.3 percent.
