Vending Machines: The industry donates over 74 tons of food and beverages to the food bank

The sector of vending is promoting an important initiative solidarity: during 2023 they were in fact collected and donated well 74 tons of foodalmost quadruple compared to the pilot project that involved Piedmontese automatic distribution companies in 2021. It is the result of the agreement signed last year between Trust (the Italian Association of Automatic Distribution) e Onlus Food Bank Foundation, entered into full operation and extended to the entire national territory. The regions that donated the most products are Sicily (21 tons donated) and theEmilia Romagna (18 tons), followed by the Piedmont (14 tons) and from Friuli Venezia Giulia (11 tons).

Most of the products collected are water, drinks, both fresh and dry foods, sandwiches, baked goods, snacks and snacks. Just the excellent percentage of recovery of fresh products (fruit and vegetables, ready meals, cheese-based products, fridge snacks, sandwiches, etc.) highlights the important synergy between the managers of the vending machine And Food Bank. In fact, thanks to the advance with which the managers collect the products from the vending machines compared to the expiry date and the speed of the Food Bank in distributing the same products to the local partner organisations, it was possible to avoid food waste and help many families and people in difficulty.

For the operational management of this project, the 11 territorial delegations of Confida collaborated directly with the 21 regional food banks which take care of the redistribution of what was collected. This is a process that will continue throughout this year.

“As players in the food & beverage sector, the issue of fighting food waste concerns us very closely – he declared Massimo Trapletti, president of Confida – The agreement with the Food Bank is the tool that our association has introduced to also allow companies in the automatic distribution sector to be able to contribute, by donating their food surpluses, to help families and people in difficulty. We are proud of the results obtained and this year too we will continue to commit ourselves with the hope of helping more and more people.”

Since 1989 Food Bank recovers the surpluses of agri-food supply chain to redistribute them to over 7,600 organizations that offer aid to approximately 1,750,000 people in difficulty. The activity is carried out by 21 territorial banks coordinated by Onlus Food Bank Foundation. “A great result of solidarity in favor of those who experience situations of difficulty and social and environmental responsibility, also a contribution to achieving the objectives of the UN 2030 agenda – he explained Giovanni Bruno, president of the Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus – Many people were able to benefit from quality food and this was made possible, and makes us particularly grateful, by the creation of a real partnership based on common objectives with Confida”.
