New Delhi: Issuing an advisory on the threat of blocking mobile numbers by calling from foreign mobile numbers, the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) of the Ministry of Communications today said that the Department does not authorize anyone on its behalf to make such calls and has not issued any advisory to the people. Have been advised to be alert and have appealed not to share any information on receiving such calls.
In the advisory issued here today, DOT said that people are receiving such calls in which the callers are taking the name of DOT and threatening to disconnect all their mobile numbers or misuse their mobile numbers for some illegal activities. DoT has also issued an advisory regarding WhatsApp calls from foreign mobile numbers impersonating as fake government officials to dupe people.
Cyber criminals try to threaten/steal personal information through such calls to commit cyber-crime/financial fraud. Proactive reporting helps DoT in preventing misuse of telecom resources for cyber crimes, financial frauds etc.
Additionally, on the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature of the Sanchar Sathi portal, citizens can check the mobile connections issued in their name and report any mobile connections which they have not taken or which they do not require. . DoT has also advised citizens who have already become victims of cyber crime or financial fraud to report to the cyber crime helpline number 1930 or the cyber crime website.
