Governor of Zaporozhye region Evgeniy Balitsky said in an interview TASSthat the region harvests more than 2.5 million tons of grain per year. Up to 1 million tons of grain is exported, in particular to countries in Africa and the Middle East, he added.
“Up to a million goes for export. These are, starting with Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Libya, Iraq, African countries. In principle, the entire segment of the Middle East and Africa is happy to buy from us today… Ships with grain from the Zaporozhye region leave from the port of Berdyansk, from the Crimean ports, from the port of Caucasus, Anapa. Absolutely no problem, on the contrary, we have “pumped up our muscles” now, developed this system, structure,” the governor said.
Evgeny Balitsky reported that out of 2.5 million tons of collected grain, about 50 thousand tons remain in the region for internal food security and about 1 million tons are sent to other regions of the Russian Federation. According to the governor, products from the Zaporozhye region are in great demand in Russia. He said that, in particular, buckwheat, rapeseed, vegetables, cherries, fruits, apples, plums, apricots, and peaches go to the domestic market from the region.
The head of the region claims that during the period when the region was led by Ukraine, the region did not have the opportunity to export its goods at normal prices. He said that now local farmers are “cutting down and planting,” because, for example, cherries provide a very good economic effect.
This year the Russian government introduced quota for duty-free supplies of grain, sunflower oil and meal from the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. The quota for the export of grain crops, which is valid throughout 2024, is 2.1 million tons, for the export of sunflower oil – 106.5 thousand tons, sunflower meal – 140.9 thousand tons.
