Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the fifth budget on her behalf in the Parliament on 1 February 2023. At the same time, the demand to present the Rail Budget separately has now arisen from Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has advocated this, after which there was a political uproar.
The old practice was abolished in 2017
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget on February 1. Rail budget will also be presented simultaneously. The practice of presenting it separately was done away with in 2017. Earlier, the Railway Budget was presented before the General Budget. But now only the Finance Minister includes it in his budget. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has now demanded to present it separately and has reiterated this demand even on the day of the ongoing budget meeting in Delhi.
Rail budget is also now with the general budget
Explain that NITI Aayog had recommended to the central government that the practice of separate railway budget should be abolished and during the tenure of the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, by uniting the railway and central budget, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the general budget from 2017. Rail budget was presented in the budget itself. Since then this tradition continues. This tradition, which has been going on since the British rule, was abolished.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s demand
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was the Railway Minister from 1998 to 2001 in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. Nitish Kumar has demanded to present the Rail Budget separately. He has linked it to employment and said that then after the railway budget, railway jobs were discussed among the people. The attention of the citizens of the country used to be towards the railway budget. On the other hand, BJP opposes this and BJP believes that presenting the Railway Budget along with the General Budget has benefited.
