Bundestag Vice President: Katrin Göring-Eckardt calls for corrections to the debt brake

Vice President of the Bundestag Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens) has spoken out in favor of reforms to the debt brake this year. “We should break the rigid debt rules,” says the politician to the dpa news agency. This is in the interest of the municipalities and the economy.

“The uncertainty about the availability of federal funds is currently causing problems everywhere in Germany,” said Göring-Eckardt. This applies not only to projects in the economy, but also in municipalities. “The quality of life of citizens depends on municipalities being well organized and being able to do more than their duty.”

However, the federal government is also facing major financial challenges that require the debt rules to be relaxed. Germany is likely to be required to provide more aid to Ukraine in the future. So far, the USA has been the country’s most important supporter – however, further aid was recently blocked in the Republican-led House of Representatives and also the Outcome of the fall elections should be crucial for further help.

Göring-Eckardt also demanded that the financial conditions for the payment of climate money to citizens must be met in a timely manner. According to the politician, this requires reliable start-up funding from the federal budget and a reduction in environmentally harmful subsidies.

According to Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), the required payment mechanism will not be ready until 2025. “It has been agreed that the climate money will come,” said Lindner.
