Cruises are taking off again after the Covid years, and, surprisingly, they are winning over millennials. In 2023 passengers reached 31.7 million, +7% compared to 2019, and in 2024 it is estimated they will reach 35 million (35.7). Already in 2022 the economic and employment impact had started to rise again, with 1.2 million jobs and the 2023 figure is expected to grow. With prospects also for the next few years, given the expected launch of 56 new ships in the next 5 years, of which 8 already in 2024, bringing the hospitality capacity from the current 677 thousand beds to 745 thousand in 2028.
From the State of the Cruise Industry traced by CLIA, the International Association of Cruise Lines, during Seatrade, the large themed event scheduled in Miami, demand is destined to grow with a significant peak among millennials. The share of “cruise novices” is rising and in 2023 they were more than one passenger in 4, 27% of the total (+12% compared to 2022). Overall, 82% of cruise passengers plan to return on board within a year and 72% of international travelers are considering a cruise vacation.
Cruises dedicated to exploration and itineraries linked to adventure are developing rapidly, with a +72% recorded between 2019 and 2023. Cruises represent around 2% of global tourism, but “in 2022 it generated an economic impact equal 90% compared to 2019, despite the passenger volume stopping at 70%” declared Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of CLIA.
