Doc Maremma Toscana: +13% in the first half of 2023

In the Tuscan wine scene shines the Doc Maremma Tuscany. In fact, the denomination stands out as one of the most dynamic, recording a 13% increase in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022. This is what emerges from the data released by Ancestral (Associazione Vini Toscani a PDO and PGI), which show for the area a trend in contrast with the general situation in Tuscany. In the semester in question, the Doc Maremma Tuscany ranked fourth among the Designations of Origin (Do) for bottled volumes, preceded only by Tuscany Igt, Chianti And Chianti Classico.

The native vines protagonists of growth

“The consolidation trend continues for the Denomination which at the moment is proving to be more dynamic than the other Tuscan ones”, he explains with satisfaction Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana. Driving the growth is an indigenous vine: “Vermentino grew in the first six months of 2023, now representing almost 34% of the bottled Maremma Toscana DOC, against 28% in 2022, and we expect that the new Superiore mention for this type also bring strong growth in the perceived quality and image of the Denomination,” he added Mazzei.

The growing interest in another native vine, the cherry blossomstrongly rooted in Maremmaa territory that best enhances its facets and peculiarities.

Denomination numbers

In fact, many of the most important names on the national wine scene have been investing in the area for years. Currently the denomination has 9000 hectares of vineyard. The Consortium brings together 453 members, including 113 vertical cellars, which make wine from their own grapes and bottle their own wines. The production, which takes place in 28 municipalities in the province of Grosseto, amounts to approx 7 million bottles of wineof which 35% organic.

To native vines – Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo nero, Alicante, Sangiovese, Pugnitello, Aleatico, Vermentino, Trebbiano, Ansonica, Malvasia, Grechetto – starting from the 90s, international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdotfor which the territory of Maremma he soon proved to be particularly suited.
