The latest pressure to raise a barrier against Chinese vehicles came from the Senate and in particular from Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Sherrod Brown, for whom “Chinese electric vehicles are an existential threat to the American auto industry.” His position is even more radical than that expressed by any US politician on the issue: until now the others had limited themselves to asking for high duties to keep Chinese electric vehicles out of the country.

In February, the White House said the United States was opening an investigation into whether the Chinese cars posed a national security risk. China, Biden said, “could flood our market with its vehicles, putting our national security at risk.” “We cannot allow China to bring its government-backed shenanigans to the heart of the American auto industry,” Brown, a Democratic senator from Ohio, a car-producing state, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

On the other hand, US exports to China fell 4% to just under $148 billion.
