Employees asked for a raise – Kommersant FM

Every fourth Russian is afraid to ask for a salary increase. Most often, employees are confident that a conversation with management will be useless, this survey data is provided by the job search service SuperJob. Another 26% of respondents said that they had begun negotiations on a salary increase, and every third person planned such a dialogue with their superiors. Employees who earn over 100 thousand rubles are more likely to ask for a salary increase, SuperJob points out.

How does business respond to these requests? And are companies ready to increase salaries? “Kommersant FM” asked these questions to the managers and owners of enterprises.

General Director of the Elkat plant Maxim Tretyakov: “This is usually associated with the beginning of the year, when wages increase. This year they actually increased it, from 15% to 20%. At an enterprise, it is almost impossible to increase someone’s salary on a spot basis; if you increase the driver’s salary, then this needs to be discussed with everyone else. Despite the fact that salary records imply some privacy, in fact it is a well-known fact, so I gave everyone a raise. I think this is not the end, especially there is no choice here, since people can vote with their feet by leaving the enterprise. It’s quite difficult to find replacements for specialists now, I’m choosing the lesser evil.”

Co-founder of the “Sur” bar, the pasta bar “Arenda” and the cafe “Intelligence” Nikita Fomkin: “In management positions, such as manager, chef, in principle, all bonuses are tied to KPI. As for line personnel, we do indexation once a year, although not according to the market, 5-7%, now in the spring we will also index. Salaries in public catering are constantly growing, we have to keep up. The chefs had to sharply raise their salaries, probably almost doubling. Only guys in management positions come and ask for a raise, because everyone else has an absolutely market rate, the average for Moscow.”

Co-founder of the Bitrix24 service Sergey Ryzhikov: “There is a certain desynchronization between companies and employees. People react primarily to inflationary price changes and increases in prices for certain categories of products or services. Companies generally move forward with some plans, salary adjustments once a year. And this out of sync with people leads to the fact that sometimes people come earlier than the company plans to hang. Both people and the company negotiate and adjust salaries, most often on New Year’s Day.”

According to a SuperJob survey, only 4% of Russians believe that the salary corresponds to their skill level, over 80% would like to increase their salary. Against the backdrop of a shortage of personnel, the problem only becomes more complicated; if the manager is not ready to seek compromises, employees tend to change jobs, notes Anna Alfimova, managing partner of Alena Vladimirskaya’s Career Laboratory: “Over the past one and a half to two years, salary changes have very often been slowed down by comments that you need to wait, be patient, the market is not stable. Therefore, they refused to internally increase the level of remuneration in the same position in which the expert was. Lately there have actually been a few more people who have started trying to talk to management.

I probably agree that there remains a large part of people who do not want, cannot, or are afraid to have such a conversation with management. Most people still give up after the first or second step, believing that management is somehow not reacting very adequately or is not specifically promoting them, and it is easier to leave for another business than to achieve a promotion in their company. At least a third of people who come to negotiate compensation start their search in the market.”

The average salary in Russia at the end of 2023 reached 74 thousand rubles. per month, such calculations were provided by Rosstat. According to official data, salaries increased by 14% compared to 2022.
