Fincantieri, 1.18 billion contract in Indonesia for two patrol vessels

Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense have signed a contract for the supply of two PPA units (Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessels), worth 1.18 billion euros. These are ships, explains a note, “highly flexible” and with a high technological level, capable of carrying out patrolling, sea rescue, civil protection and “fighting on the front line” operations.

The ships, originally intended for the Italian Navy, are being built and fitted out in the shipyards of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, in Liguria. The units are 143 meters long and can travel over 32 knots.

The interest of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense in the Ppa Units arises from the naval campaign in the Far East of a Ppa class ship, the “Francesco Morosini” of the Italian Navy, which also stopped in Indonesia in 2023. According to Fincantieri, the operation could trigger further synergies in the operational, industrial and technological fields between the two countries. The Units will be able to support Indonesia in protecting national interests and contributing to the stability of the delicate strategic quadrant of the Indo-Pacific.

Specifically, Fincantieri will be “prime contractor” for the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and will coordinate other industrial partners, including Leonardo, for the adaptations of the ships’ combat system and the provision of related logistics services.

The contract was signed by Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and general manager of the Fincantieri group, and by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, in the presence of Dario Deste, general manager of the Military Ships division.

The Ppa Unit is able to use fast boats such as Rhib (Rigid hull inflatable boat) up to a length of over 11 metres, which can be launched with lateral cranes or a stern slipway. She can have a crew of 170 people and is equipped with a combined diesel and gas turbine (Codag) plant and an electric propulsion system.
