Flights to New York airports suspended due to earthquake

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) informed airlines of the need to suspend flights to New York airports in connection with the earthquake, Reuters reports. Some flights heading to New York were diverted to other airports, according to FlightAware. New York Mayor Eric Adams said that the city authorities are taking action in connection with the emergency situation. At the moment there is information about the serious impact of the earthquake on the city’s infrastructure.

According to Reuters, in addition to airports, the operation of the Holland Tunnel has also been suspended. It crosses the Hudson River and connects Kennel Street in Manhattan with 12th and 13th streets in Jersey City (New Jersey).

“Our preliminary reports do not indicate significant life safety or infrastructure issues caused by the earthquake. We are conducting thorough inspections of critical areas,” New York Mayor Eric Adams wrote on the social network X (ex-Twitter).

Earlier it was reported that a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York was interrupted due to the earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake is 4.8. It occurred 46 km northwest of the city of Edison in the US state of New Jersey at 14:23 local time (17:23 Moscow time). The source of the earthquake lay at a depth of 4.7 km.
