A possible cessation of Russian gas supplies through the territory of Ukraine will not affect Hungary, since gas transit from the Russian Federation is also carried out via the Turkish Stream. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó. He noted that Hungary now receives sufficient volumes of Russian gas, but if it needs additional supplies, it will turn to Gazprom.
“This is not important for us, given that gas supplies to Hungary are now via the Turkish Stream. I think it was an excellent decision on our part to build the Turkish Stream together with Serbia, Turkey and Bulgaria. Now he ensures the security of our gas supplies. We do not need transit through Ukraine. Ukraine’s decision on the transit of Russian gas will not have any impact on us,” said Mr. Szijjártó, commenting to reporters on the issue of supplying Hungary with gas (quoted from RIA Novosti).
According to Peter Szijjártó, in 2023 Hungary will receive 5.6 billion cubic meters via Turkish Stream. m of gas. At the same time, the incoming capacity of the Turkish Stream in Hungary is 8.5 billion cubic meters. m per year. In this regard, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry admitted that gas supplies from Russia along this route could be increased. “There is still free capacity to increase. This is not a problem,” he added.
In May 2022, Ukraine stopped receiving gas through the Sokhranovka GIS. As a result, there are two routes left for the export of Russian gas to Europe: through the Ukrainian checkpoint Sudzha and the Turkish Stream. The European Union intends to completely abandon fuel supplies from Russia by 2027.
