New Delhi: The government has allowed export of 64,400 tonnes of onion to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bangladesh through National Co-operative Exports Limited (NCEL). The Commerce Ministry has issued a notification in this regard. While Bangladesh has been allowed to export 50,000 tonnes of onion, 14,400 tonnes will be exported to UAE.

“Export of 14,400 tonnes of onion has been notified to UAE through NCEL with a quarterly limit of 3,600 tonnes,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification. DGFT is the commerce ministry’s arm that regulates import and export of onions to UAE through NCEL. Looks at export related criteria.

Regarding exports to Bangladesh, it has been said that the modalities will be decided by NCEL in consultation with the Department of Consumer Affairs. Although there is a ban on export of onion, the government allows its export to some friendly countries in a certain quantity. This export is allowed by the government on the basis of requests received from other countries.

On December 8 last year, the government had banned the export of onion till March 31 this year in order to increase domestic availability and keep prices under control. Earlier, the Center had decided to increase the sale of buffer stock of onion at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg in the retail market in October 2023 to provide relief to consumers.

The government has already taken several steps to control prices. On October 28, the government had imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of $800 per tonne on onion exports till December 31, 2023. In August, India had imposed an export duty of 40 percent on onion till December 31, 2023. In the current financial year, 9.75 lakh tonnes of onion was exported from the country between April 1, 2023 and August 4, 2023. The top three importing countries in terms of value are Bangladesh, Malaysia and United Arab Emirates.
