Country’s first ABIP-IVF-ET calf was born
Sushil Khot is a resident of Bagni village of Sangli in Maharashtra. Lakshmi Bachhiya was born in her house through IVF Embryo Transplant method. This calf is being told as a sprout of prosperity. It was born through the IVF Embryo Transplantation (ABIP-IVF-ET) process under the Accelerated Breed Improvement Program run by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India. In this program, a target of two lakh female progeny has been set by IVF embryo transplant to embryos of high genetic species to increase the milk production of dairy farmers.
The program started in September last year
NDDB Dairy Services, which runs the field operations of NDDB, started this program in the month of September in the year 2022. Efforts of nine months are successful that till date 13 healthy females have been born from the transplant of IVF embryos. Lakshmi is the first calf born from IVF embryo transplant at Rajarambapu Patil Sahakari Dugdh Sangh Limited, Islampur, Sangli in Maharashtra. In the coming time, 250 such surrogate cows and buffaloes are going to give birth, whose pregnancy has been confirmed through IVF embryo transfer.
Will give 40 liters of milk in a day
Lakshmi is born from an IVF embryo of high genetic merit. Its capacity is to produce 35-40 liters of milk in a day. If this happens, it will open doors of prosperity for the milk farmers of the region. Because at present the average milk production of the present cows of the dairy farmers in that area is only up to 20 litres. NDS, a wholly owned subsidiary of NDDB, was selected by the Union Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying to implement the programme. NDS started the implementation of the program from Islampur in Maharashtra in September last year.

Congratulating the team involved in this program, NDDB & NDS Chairman Meenesh Shah said that the journey till here was not easy. Initially, the success rate of IVF embryo implantation was very low, only 9%. Today it has reached 46% in some cases. He says that the success of a test tube baby depends on the proper selection of recipients and their management. Still a lot of work needs to be done in this area.
Scheme is running in many states of the country
The NDS team has been working non-stop for a year on this plan. The program has already been extended to 15 milk unions in six states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The NDS team has done 1,436 embryo transplants since September 2022. Of these, 1,211 pregnancy tests have been done. This year, a target has been set to increase embryo transplant activities and conceive 3,000 recipients.
Conditionally it will be calf or female
The NDS says that the embryos created with this technique have a 90 percent chance of being female. The breed of embryos is chosen by farmers and gender-sorted IVF embryos from six breeds of cattle and one buffalo have been used in such a way that 90 percent of the babies born are female. Children born through embryo transfer techniques will not have any of the characteristics of the surrogate. Milk production capacity from Gir and Sahiwal breed of cows will be 15-20 liters per day and from Murrah buffalo breed up to 20 liters per day.
