Japan to allocate $136 million to support fishermen due to a ban on the supply of fish to China

The Japanese government will allocate 20 billion yen ($136.7 billion) to support the fishery business after a complete ban on the import of Japanese seafood, which was introduced by China due to the release of water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. About it informs Reuters citing Kyodo.

The decision will be officially announced early next week.

Japan began dumping water purified from radioactive particles from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant on August 24. On the same day, Chinese customs authorities banned importing all seafood from Japan, vowing to adjust regulatory measures “as necessary”. According to the media, the Fukushima-1 operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) after this statement promised to compensate Japanese manufacturers for the damage suffered as a result of the export ban by the “foreign government”.

On July 4, the IAEA deemed it safe to dump accumulated water contaminated with the radioactive isotope of tritium into the Pacific Ocean. Before the release, Japanese authorities promised they would dilute the water to bring the tritium content below regulatory standards.

The decision was made after two years of research by IAEA experts. The water was used to cool the nuclear power units damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, and it can no longer be stored at the plant site. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that the discharge of treated water “will have a negligible radiation impact on the population and the environment.”
