LIC gives big relief to Odisha train accident victims, simplified claim process, released phone number

State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has announced relaxation in documents to be filed by nominees/legal heirs of train accident victims, but no such public announcement has been made by the two private companies. General insurers who covered the passengers of two express trains that met with an accident in Odisha. Similarly, no announcement has come from private life insurance companies and regional regulator like LIC.
Two passenger trains and a goods train collided in a tragic train accident, killing at least 288 people and injuring nearly 1,000. Those who reserve train tickets through the ticket booking portal of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) can opt for accidental insurance of Rs 10 lakh by paying a nominal premium of 0.35 paise.
The policy covers death/disability/medical expenses due to train accident during the journey. IRCTC has selected SBI General Insurance and Liberty General Insurance to offer travel insurance cover. While Liberty General Insurance has given a phone number and an email ID to file a claim on its website, no such information is available on the home page of SBI General Insurance or IRCTC website.
LIC Chairman Siddharth Mohanty announced that claimants of LIC policies and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana can produce the list of casualties published by railway authorities, police or any state or central government authorities, in lieu of a registered death certificate, for the death certificate. will be accepted as proof. According to Mohanty, a special help desk has been set up at the circle and branch level to answer claim related queries and provide assistance to the claimants.
All efforts will be made to ensure that the claimants are reached and the claims of the affected families are settled expeditiously. Mohanty said that claimants can also call LIC on 02268276827. People are now asking why IRCTC or Government of India does not provide free insurance cover to the passengers for traveling in the train. Former MP K.C. He said that IRCTC had started providing accident insurance cover to passengers booking tickets on its portal a few years back. Initially the premium was 0.98 paise and now it has come down to 0.35 paise, he said. The insurance official said, while the risk coverage and ease of buying insurance cover is good, the nomination facility is a bit cumbersome. Perhaps IRCTC can have a column, when a person opts for insurance cover.
