The government of Moldova is negotiating with Romania on the possible sale of the only Moldovan port of Giurgiulesti, said the head of the government press service, Daniel Voda. According to him, the deal will help attract investment to Moldova. He did not disclose the estimated amount.
“This is a discussed idea that is on our bilateral agenda. Prime Minister Dorin Recean is very focused on attracting investments to our country, especially in infrastructure projects,” Mr. Vodă told the Mold-street portal.
The port of Giurgiulesti is located 133.8 km from the Black Sea on the banks of the Prut and Danube rivers. This is Moldova’s only access to the sea. In 2021, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) bought 100% of the capital of Danube Logistics, which operated the port.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku in September announced his intention to buy the right to manage the port in Giurgiulesti from the EBRD. It is assumed that it can become part of a strategic trade and transport hub in the region. The Moldovan authorities plan to build a grain storage facility in Giurgiulesti with a capacity of 80 thousand tons, a new pier of 150 m and additional transshipment capacity for 800 thousand tons. The updated port should be operational in 2028. The project cost is estimated at approximately $34 million.
