New Delhi: In the year 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee proposed to connect Thailand and Myanmar with this road. But after Vajpayee’s government left, this project remained only on paper. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in the year 2014, work on it started again. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says that 70 percent of the work on the ambitious highway project passing through India-Myanmar-Thailand has been completed. India, Myanmar and Thailand are working on a nearly 1,400-km-long highway, the completion of which will boost trade, health, education and tourism between the Southeast Asian nations. This highway will connect Moreh in Manipur to Mae Sot in Thailand via Myanmar. Gadkari did not give details regarding the timeline for its commissioning. There has been a delay in this strategic highway project. The government’s earlier target was to make it operational by December 2019.

With the construction of this highway, you will not need to take a flight to go from India to Myanmar and Thailand. You will be able to go to Thailand from India via car or bike. The work of this highway has been completed to a large extent in India and Thailand, but a lot of work remains to be done in Myanmar. Recently, at the BIMSTEC countries conference in Kolkata, the ministers of Myanmar and Thailand had claimed that the work of this trilateral road project would be completed by 2027. In 2002, Vajpayee proposed this project to promote trade between India and ASEAN. Vajpayee said that this highway could be extended beyond Thailand via Cambodia to Vietnam and then to Laos.

This highway is also known as the Kolkata-Bangkok Highway. The maximum part of this falls in India while the least part is in Thailand. This highway starts from Kolkata and goes to Siliguri in the north. Further, via Cooch Behar, it will enter Assam from West Bengal through Shrirampur border. From Dimapur it will enter Nagaland and then enter Myanmar at Moreh near Imphal in Manipur. Will enter Thailand via Mae Sot via Myanmar’s cities of Mandalay, Bago, Yangon and Myawaddy.
