Pulses Price Hike: Every possible effort is being made by the Central Government to control inflation. Lok Sabha elections are going to be held in the next three months. In such a situation, a big step has been taken by the Modi government to control the rising prices of pulses. The government has extended the duty free import of urad and arhar dal till 31 March 2025. With this, people will be able to get cheap pulses. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification regarding this. It has been told that earlier the duty free import period of urad and arhar dal by the government was till 31 March 2024. But, it is being extended for one year. It is noteworthy that the reason for the increase in retail inflation rate in the month of November was being attributed to the rise in the prices of pulses. This month the inflation rate of pulses reached 20.23 percent whereas in the month of October it was 18.79 percent. However, due to the efforts of the Central Government, the prices of onion and tomato have been controlled in December. Apart from this people Dearness Bharat flour and rice are also being sold by the government to provide relief.
Prices increased 37 percent in one year
There has been a big increase in the prices of pulses in a year. Last year on December 28, 2022, the average price of arhar dal was Rs 111.50 per kg. Which has reached the price of Rs 152.38 per kg on 28 December 2023. This means that the price of arhar dal has increased by about 37 percent in a year. Similarly, the price of urad dal was Rs 107.33 per kg on December 28, 2022, which is being sold today at Rs 122.46 per kg. Earlier, the Central Government had also decided to reduce the stock limit of Arhar and Urad Dal. At the same time, last week the period of zero import duty on lentils was also extended till 2025.
Government wants stability on import policy
Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said that the production of some pulses is not as much as we consume. To maintain the stability of the import policy, the existing exemption on lentils has been extended till March 2025 so that the farmers of the producing countries can get a clear signal from India and can plan their sowing. The basic import duty on lentils was reduced to zero in July, 2021, while 10 percent agri-infrastructure cess was exempted in February, 2022. Since then, it has been extended several times and is currently valid till March, 2024. A finance ministry official said the notification is only to extend the exemption of zero duty and agri-infrastructure cess for lentils and not for the three crude edible oils. India is the world’s largest pulse producer and importer. During the financial year 2022-23, India had imported 24.96 lakh tonnes of pulses.
Decrease in India’s imports
According to government data, India’s imports declined by 4.33 percent to $ 54.48 billion in November, whereas it was $ 56.95 billion in November 2022. The country’s trade deficit stood at $20.58 billion in November. In the April-November period of the current financial year 2023-24, exports declined by 6.51 percent to $ 278.8 billion. At the same time, imports during this period fell by 8.67 percent to 445.15 billion dollars. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that despite the global recession, India’s exports have been good. Due to decline in oil imports, imports declined by 8.67 percent to $445.15 billion during this period. Oil imports declined to $113.65 billion in April-November, which was $139.29 billion in the same period last year. Trade deficit, i.e. the difference between imports and exports, stood at $166.35 billion in April-November, which was $189.21 billion in the same period last year. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said while talking to reporters that India’s exports have been good considering the challenges at the global level.
