The Federal Government has in the first quarter of 2024 Arms exports
Approved worth almost 4.9 billion euros – even more than the year before. This comes from an answer from Ministry of Economic Affairs to BSW Bundestag member Sevim Dağdelen. In total, of the 4.9 billion euros, 3.7 billion euros went to war weapons.

This means that export permits for German military equipment increased further at the beginning of this year. Approvals for German arms exports were already granted last year rose to a record value of 12.2 billion euros – including 4.4 billion euros for Ukraine.

The traffic light had actually intended to curb arms exports and to introduce a control law for this purpose. However, the war in Ukraine stopped this plan. The self-imposed ban on arms deliveries to ongoing wars was later lifted by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Three quarters of deliveries go to Ukraine

Arms exports worth 3.5 billion, or 72 percent of the total volume, went to the
Ukraine. The government has also approved exports for Singapore (584 million euros), India (143 million euros), Saudi Arabia (126 million euros), Qatar (97 million euros), the USA (51 million euros), as well as Algeria and Brazil ( around 40 million euros each) and Turkey (23 million euros), as the ministry response also shows. According to the ministry, the figures are provisional and “may still change due to corrections and error corrections”.

The ministry points out that the approvals for Turkey and Saudi Arabia are almost entirely intended for a joint project with EU or NATO partners. Overall, the approvals for exports to EU countries, to NATO and NATO-equivalent countries as well as to Ukraine, South Korea and Singapore correspond to 89 percent of the total approval value, the ministry wrote.

The Union and SPD government largely stopped arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia in 2018 because of its involvement in the Yemen war and because of the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, in 2023, the traffic light coalition relaxed the restrictions because of the cessation of hostilities in Yemen. Exports to Israel fell this year.
