“I’m surprised at what you sometimes have to hear from customers. Specifically, I’m thinking of a situation where I was threatened with a report because I didn’t want to give something without a prescription – which I’m not allowed to do. And there is more bureaucratic work in a pharmacy than I expected. Nevertheless, the job is even nicer than I imagined because working with people gives me so much.”
How much I earn
“As an employed pharmacist, you are usually paid according to the tariff: It starts at 3,895 euros gross per month in the first year of employment. With professional experience, the salary can increase to up to 5,000 euros gross per month. There are actually hardly any differences in payment between pharmacies in Germany. It may be that your earnings are different if you work in a rural area or in a big city like I do. I earn 4100 euros gross per month. It’s definitely enough to be able to go out and go on vacation without having to worry too much about money. If I want to earn more, I can also switch to industry as a pharmacist, i.e. to a pharmaceutical company.”
When I don’t give out medication
“One time a person wanted nose drops but said he wanted to use them for his eyes. In such a case, you can also refuse to give it. Or if someone wants to buy certain medications in very large quantities. In general, if there is a prescription, we have to release the product. If there is suspicion of abuse, we will call the doctor who issued the prescription and consult.
