Sberbank prevented the theft of almost 300 billion rubles of customer funds in 2023

In 2023, the effectiveness of Sberbank’s anti-fraud system (MOEX: SBER) reached 99.6%, said Stanislav Kuznetsov, deputy chairman of the credit organization. In total, over the past year, Sberbank managed to prevent the theft of customer funds amounting to almost 300 billion rubles.

“In 2023, the effectiveness of our antifraud reached 99.6% – this is the best indicator among such systems in the world, but at the same time we set ourselves an even more ambitious goal – to reach the level of 99.9%. Since the beginning of the SVO, more than 600 attacks have been carried out on Sberbank, and none of them were effective,” said Mr. Kuznetsov during a working visit to Simferopol, where yesterday, January 18, opened Sberbank head office. According to him, just last year Sberbank successfully repelled 124 DDoS attacks.

Speaking about trends in the field of cybercrime in 2024, Stanislav Kuznetsov noted that in the current geopolitical situation, a decrease in the activity of attackers is not expected. According to Sberbank estimates, the complexity of attacks will increase this year. “An obvious recent trend is attacks on supply chains. Attackers cannot succeed by attacking Sberbank head-on, so we are seeing more and more frequent attempts to attack Sber Group companies and our partners,” he explained.

According to Mr. Kuznetsov, telephone fraud using social engineering methods also remains popular. “With the increasing availability of new technologies, new threats arise, in particular, the creation of deepfakes. Such cases are already known, but they are not widespread yet, as they require more resources for preparation. However, this is a very real threat for which we need to be prepared,” he concluded.

In November 2023, the head of Sberbank German Gref told about the largest DDoS attack in the entire history of the bank. As the credit institution’s press service clarified, hackers tried to disable the bank’s website by sending the largest number of requests per second in the bank’s history. According to Interfax, hackers sent 1 million requests per second.
