Telecom regulator TRAI recommends to provide service showing name of caller on phone – Dainik Savera Times

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday recommended that a system of displaying the name of the caller on the mobile phone screen be introduced under ‘Calling Name Presentation’ (CNAP) supplementary service. However, all telecom companies will provide this facility only on the request of the customer.
The introduction of this feature will help a lot in getting rid of frequent unwanted calls. When the CNAP feature is activated, the customer will be able to see the name of the caller on his phone screen. TRAI said the government should issue appropriate directions to telecom companies to make CNAP feature available in all phones sold in India after a specified date.
The name and identity details given in the Customer Application Form (CAF) to be filled at the time of taking mobile phone connection can be used during CNAP service. While native smartphone tools and apps like Truecaller and Bharat Caller also provide caller name recognition and spam detection features.
But these services are based on data collected from people which is not always reliable. The telecom regulator recommended that all access service providers provide CNAP service to their telephone customers on request. TRAI had issued a consultation paper in this regard in November 2022, seeking comments from stakeholders, public and industry.
