The Central Bank spoke about a new fraud scheme with an invitation to a personal reception

The Central Bank (CB) reported on a fraudulent scheme in which Russians are invited to a “personal appointment” at the Central Bank from a fake email address. Attackers pose as employees of the regulator, this fraudulent scheme is used throughout the country.

According to the Central Bank, the letters contain appeals by name and patronymic, they indicate the time of receipt and the current address of the Central Bank branch in the addressee’s region of residence. For credibility, scammers change the sender’s email address to the Central Bank domain – cbr.ru.

The regulator explained what a personal invitation is – one of the reasons to start a dialogue. After that, the attackers can call him and, under various pretexts, start asking for bank card details and an SMS code, or seek to transfer money to the accounts of scammers.

“The Bank of Russia, on its own initiative, does not invite citizens to a personal appointment, its employees do not call people and do not send copies of any documents to anyone, do not request personal and banking information, do not offer to perform any operations with the account,” the Central Bank added. In May, the Central Bank toldthat scammers began to approach investors on behalf of a brokerage company. According to the Bank of Russia, in the first quarter a record was set for the theft of funds from bank customers – more than 4.5 billion rubles.
