The first power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey received permission to enter into operation, reported at Rosatom. To begin loading nuclear fuel into the reactor, the Akkuyu Nuclear company (owned by Rosatom) needs to obtain a license to operate the first power unit. It is expected that he can earn in 2024.
According to Akkuyu Nuclear General Director Anastasia Zoteeva, obtaining a permit confirms that the specialists have fulfilled all the requirements of Turkish legislation and complied with international standards for the construction of nuclear power plants.
The state corporation noted that Akkuyu Nuclear specialists are now continuing to prepare technical documentation for submitting an application for a license to operate the first power unit. This document will allow us to begin loading nuclear fuel into the reactor and begin pre-launch control operations.
Akkuyu will be the first nuclear power plant in Turkey and will consist of four power units, each with a capacity of 1.2 thousand MW. The creation of the project is fully financed by the Russian side: the state corporation Rosatom owns a 100% stake in the project, the cost of which is estimated at $20 billion.
In early September, it became known that Rosatom had developed a possible financing scheme for the construction of a second nuclear power plant with a capacity of 4.8 GW in Turkey. The state corporation can use proceeds from the sale of electricity from the Akkuyu NPP for construction.
