Russian President Vladimir Putin held a working meeting with the head of Rosrybolovstvo, Ilya Shestakov, and discussed with him the results of the fishing industry for 2023. According to the head of the department, last year was a record year for Russian fishermen – the catch amounted to 5.3 million tons. This is the largest catch in the last 30 years. Mr. Shestakov also suggested that the president allow limited fishing of sterlet on the Volga, the Kremlin press service reports.

“What have you achieved? Such an important area as the reproduction of sturgeon: yes, it is not successful in all areas, but it is with sterlet that we now see that the stock has recovered strongly. This is noted by both amateur fishermen and industrialists,” said the head of Rosrybolovstvo (quoted from website Kremlin). He proposed opening sterlet for recreational fishing in some areas of the Volga in 2024.

Mr. Putin asked the head of Rosrybolovstvo about the situation with livestock in the northern regions. He replied that special attention is currently being paid to restoring the whitefish population, but this is a long process. According to Mr. Shestakov, whitefish reproduction can last until 2040. The restoration program is being developed by Rosrybolovstvo jointly with regional governments and the Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Shestakov added during his report that by 2025, Russian fish farming enterprises and farms will be fully provided with domestically produced feed. The head of the department predicted the provision of replanting material by 2029.

A Russian fishing company sold two companies with rights to catch about 15 thousand tons of herring. The company intends to focus on the pollock fishery.
