The Ministry of Energy reported a decrease in gas supplies to unfriendly countries

At the end of 2023, Russia sent almost 79% of liquefied natural gas supplies to unfriendly countries. This was reported by TASS with reference to the presentation of the head of the Ministry of Energy Nikolai Shulginov for a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Energy. Last year, the share of gas exports to unfriendly countries decreased from 49.2% to 24.1% in annual terms, while to friendly countries it increased from 50.8% to 75.9%.

According to the document, LNG supplies from Russia to friendly countries accounted for 21.3% in 2023 (15.4% in 2022), and to unfriendly countries – 78.7%, compared to 84.6% a year earlier. The share of coal supplies from the Russian Federation to unfriendly countries decreased from 39.8% to 18%, and to friendly countries it increased from 60.2% to 82%.

According to the European Commission (EC), Russian LNG supplies in 2023 amounted to 17.8 billion cubic meters, which is 12.6% more than in 2022. At the same time, the share of Russian LNG in Europe’s total liquefied gas imports in 2023 was about 15%. The EC wants to reduce purchases of liquefied natural gas from Russia as early as this year, despite the fact that Russia remains the second largest supplier of LNG to the continent after the United States. However, it is still difficult for Europeans to find a replacement for Russian volumes: lower gas prices have increased demand for it in Asia.
