The start-up complex of the second power unit of the Belarusian NPP has been accepted for commercial operation

The acceptance commission, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Pyotr Parkhomchik, signed an act of acceptance into commercial operation of the start-up complex of the second power unit of the Belarusian NPP, reported press service Belarusian Ministry of Energy.
“The commission’s decision is based on the positive conclusions of the supervisory authorities and the working commission of the Belarusian NPP, as well as on the basis of the license issued by the Ministry of Emergency Situations for the commercial operation of the second power unit,” the ministry’s press release says.
It is reported that the power unit is currently operating at rated power. Since its switching on, it has generated 2 billion kWh of electricity, the Ministry of Energy reported.
The BelNPP includes two power units with a capacity of 1.2 GW. Part of the construction of the project was covered by a $10 billion Russian government loan, with Rosatom NPP as the general contractor. The first power unit started operating in November 2020, the second in May 2023.
October 31, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko statedthat Russia is faced with the question of paying compensation due to the commissioning of the BelNPP at a later date. Rosatom stated that Russia and Belarus have no unresolved issues. Postponement of the project launch in the company explained the tightening of the foreign policy situation and the consequences of the pandemic.
In 2020, for the disruption of the commissioning of the first power unit due to the replacement of the reactor vessel, Minsk has already achieved a reduction in the rate on the Russian state loan (for which the nuclear power plant was built) to 3.3%. The shift in the launch of the second unit has already allowed Belarus to agree on an extension of the loan repayment period, and now Minsk is seeking a discount on nuclear fuel. Moreover, according to the Russian side, the delay in commissioning of the second power unit was due to the fault of Belarusian subcontractors.
