Renewable Energy Park: The country’s largest renewable energy company Adani Green Energy Limited has built the world’s largest renewable energy park in Khavda, a saline area of Kutch. The outer edge of this energy park is just one kilometer away from the international border with Pakistan. The park is spread over an area of 72600 hectares, i.e. 726 square km. It is being told that it is five times bigger than Paris. The company will invest approximately Rs 1.5 lakh crore to produce 30 MW of clean power in Khavda. Company’s Managing Director Vineet Jain said, we have just commissioned 2,000 MW (two gigawatt) power capacity in Khavra. We plan to add four gigawatt capacity here in the current financial year and five gigawatt capacity every year thereafter.

An airstrip was also built in the park

There is also an airstrip located at the Renewable Energy Park which is used a few times a week to transport company executives to and from Mundra or Ahmedabad.

Khavda is an area with extremely salty water, there are many challenges

There are many challenges in this area of extremely salty water. Dust storms occur from March to June, there is no communication and transportation infrastructure, the nearest habitable place is about 80 kilometers away from the energy park. During the rainy season, water does not seep under the soil and the ground water here is also saline. Despite these challenges, Adani Group is very ambitious about its renewable energy plans. It has set a target of producing 500 GW of electricity from non-fossil sources by the year 2030.

Target to produce 81 billion units of electricity

Jain said the Khavra Energy Park will produce 81 billion units of electricity at its peak, which is enough to power countries like Belgium, Chile and Switzerland. Jain said that of the 30 gigawatt capacity planned in Khavra Park, 26 gigawatt will be solar energy and four gigawatt wind capacity.

Construction of energy park will start in 2022

Adani Green Energy’s current operating portfolio includes 7,393 MW solar, 1,401 MW wind and 2,140 MW wind-solar hybrid capacity. Khavda land is owned by the government, which has given it to the Adani Group on a 40-year lease. The construction of this energy park started in 2022.
