It’s pitch black and you pick up your cell phone. A blink of an eye later, the device activates. The fact that facial recognition on mobile phones works even in the dark is also due to the technology of a small company based in Saxony. The company Freiberger Compound Materials produces semiconductor substrates for tiny infrared lasers, thanks to which the cell phone camera can recognize the user even in the dead of night. There are not many companies in the world that produce these materials. “We are the world market leader,” says boss Michael Harz proudly.
