However, the sad reality is that skiing, once considered a popular and accessible sport, has now become a luxury reserved for only a privileged few. Rising costs have created an economic barrier.
During the holidays, prices increase further. According to a survey by Altroconsumo, the cost of spending a skiing week for two in the period from 30 December to 6 January ranges from just over 1,500 euros to over 4,500 euros. The consumer organization studied prices in seven renowned Alpine resorts, among the most popular destinations for skiers, considering accommodation, ski passes and travel.
Considering all the variables the most expensive destination is Cortina d’Ampezzo, where a ski week for two people during the Christmas holidays has an average price of 4566 euros. Ski passes have a huge impact on the total amount. TO Madonna di Campigliofor a week in high season you spend 704 euros for two.
The ski pass of Dolomiti Superski it is the gateway to an exceptional setting, it’s true, but it requires investing 74 euros each for a day of skiing. Cortina, confirming itself as the most expensive ski destination already last year, is even more inaccessible this year, above all due to a 46% increase in accommodation costs, practically double compared to the average increases recorded in other cities.
The least expensive destinations
This year, as already happened in 2022, the prudent choice for those who want to save is oriented towards Friuli-Venezia Giulia, specifically Tarvisio. This location offers the opportunity to reduce travel costs by almost 50% compared to the average of the other destinations considered. Tarvisio it also stands out as one of the destinations with the most moderate increases, recording an increase of 7% compared to the same period of the previous year (2022-23). For two people, a ski week in Tarvisio has an average cost of 1,595 euros. to accommodation, practically double compared to the average increases recorded in other cities. Among the least expensive ski resorts, they follow next Tarvisio, Champoluc, with an average expenditure of 2,235 euros, and Vigo di Fassa, in Alto Adige, where an average expenditure of 2,306 euros is recorded. according to Altroconsumo’s monitoring of 29 ski resorts throughout the national territory, the price of the daily ski pass has undergone an average increase of 7.4%, while the weekly (5 days) one has increased by as much as 9.3%.
The ski pass bloodletting
In high season, Altroconsumo analyzed the prices of daily ski passes in 29 different locations, highlighting that in ten of them the costs range from 70 euros upwards, reaching up to a maximum of 76 euros as already highlighted in Dolomiti Superski, which however, according to theglobal investigation conducted by the Swiss site Blick, is surpassed, albeit very slightly, by that for theAlpe di Siusi. However, an interesting note of savings emerges in two specific locations: theAbetone in the Tuscan Apennines and the local plant of Champorcherwhich, outside the circuit Monterosa Ski in the Aosta Valley, have kept the price of the daily ski pass unchanged. But the real positive surprise is recorded in the Monterosa Ski circuit, which connects four valleys between Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont. Here, the cost of the daily ski pass has also seen a reduction for this year, confirming the trend already underway in 2022. From a previous price of 58 euros, the current price has fallen to 56 euros, representing a drop of 4.3% .
Tricks to save money
Saving on a ski holiday is not an easy task but with a few precautions you can at least avoid running into the highest prices. In addition to the predictable suggestion of avoiding high season periods, in some locations, if you buy the ski pass online, you are entitled to a 5/10% discount, so it is best to look for any offers online. Furthermore, children often pay less. The little ones can sometimes go up for free with an adult in possession of a ski pass. Traveling in a group or with a ski club you can get discounts on ski passes. Some apps that are used to skip the queue, such as My pass Sky, allow the skier to pay for the facilities only for the time actually used.
Finally, by joining the Fisi federation (Italian winter sports federation) you can get a discount of up to 50% on ski passes.
