The procedures and principles regarding the support payments to be made to fishermen who catch invasive puffer fish have been announced.

The “Communiqué on Supporting Puffer Fish Hunting” prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry came into force after being published in the Official Gazette.

The Communiqué is regarding the support payments to be given to fishermen who hunt some of the invasive puffer fish in the provinces bordering the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, with a fishing vessel registered in the Fisheries Information System (SUBİS) and having a valid license, in the period between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2026. It covers the procedures and principles.

According to this; lagocephalus sceleratus, lagocephalus spadiceus, lagocephalus suezensis, lagocephalus guentheri, tylerius spinosissimus, lagocephalus lagocephalus, sphoeroides pachygaster, torquigener flavimaculosus puffer fish species are included in the scope of supporting hunting.

During the specified period, a support payment of 25 lira will be made for each piece of the lagocephalus sceleratus species of puffer fish up to 150 thousand, and 10 lira for each number of other species specified in the notification up to 125 thousand.

DISPOSAL PROCESS OF PUZZLE FISH

The fishing of puffer fish, which is allowed within the scope of the support, will be carried out on fishing vessels under conditions that will not pose a risk to human health.

Protective gloves, leak-proof bags and similar materials will be kept on fishing vessels that will fish for puffer fish.

Fish will only be landed at points determined by the provincial directorates, their bellies will be cut open and they will be disposed of by being released into the sea in international waters at least 5 nautical miles away from the shore in the Aegean Sea and at least 10 nautical miles away from the shore in the Mediterranean.

The “Communiqué on the Support of Pufferfish Fishing (Communiqué No: 2021/20)” published in the Official Gazette dated June 27, 2021 has been repealed.
