Turkey is counting the days to have the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGP). The facility, where test production will begin with the commissioning of the first reactor this year, has now reached its final stage. Speaking at the 13th Atomexpo 2024 Forum held in Sochi, Russia, Akkuyu Nükleer A.Ş. General Manager Anastasia Zoteeva also clarified the embargoes against Rosatom, which were recently mentioned by the Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar. “If suppliers have difficulty fulfilling their obligations under existing contracts, citing sanctions restrictions, we are ready to redirect their supply chains to other countries,” Zoteeva said. “No mosquito bite, no little dirty trick can spoil our plans,” she said.

WE WILL OVERCOME PROBLEMS TOGETHER

Announcing that the main construction works have been completed, Zoteeva pointed out that they wanted to create some problems at the supply point. Stating that each new nuclear power plant is an almost 100-year project, Zoteeva also noted the impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia on the nuclear energy industry: “The technologies and equipment of nuclear power plants built within the scope of Russian projects are 98 percent independent of imports. We fulfill all our obligations under existing contracts and will continue to do so. “We will deal with the problems together.”

ELECTRICITY WILL BE PRODUCED IN THE FIRST UNIT

Explaining the point reached in the construction of Akkuyu, Zoteeva said, “We are completing the general construction phase of the first power unit and all related infrastructure facilities. After this, we move on to full-scale commissioning work. We have reached stage A, which is an important indicator of technological readiness. This means that testing various systems and components individually is already underway. We plan to start producing the first test electricity in unit 1 this year. To do this, we must complete the main commissioning work and bring all systems of the power unit ready for commissioning. “This is a big and demanding job, but we have all the resources necessary to carry it out successfully,” he said.

$5 billion contribution from domestic companies

Anastasia Zoteeva announced that approximately 400 companies are involved in the Akkuyu NPP construction project and approximately half of them are Turkish companies. Stating that these companies supply materials, equipment and services for the project and carry out installation works, Zoteeva said, “In general, approximately 40 percent of the total work volume in the project will be carried out by Turkish companies. The total localization potential of the project is 6.5 billion dollars. A total of approximately 5 billion dollars worth of contracts have been signed to date. “We attach special importance to attracting Turkish suppliers to the project,” he said.
