Eid hope in dry onion whose weight reaches 30 TL

This year, the production was low and the onions in the warehouses suffered from losses, so the current supply could not meet the demand, and onion prices skyrocketed to 30 liras. The only hope for a decline in prices is the introduction of new harvest products. It is stated that this will be after the Ramadan holiday at the earliest.

Onion, which is sold for 18 liras per kilo in Istanbul, finds buyers in the market between 25-30 liras.

The hope of the shopkeepers, who say that the decrease in production causes an increase in prices, is with the new harvest. Feast of Ramadan post.

As of the end of the month, the price expectation of dry onions is 10 lira, and the expectation for the sale price in the market and in the market is 15 liras.

FIRES HAVE OCCURRED, PRICE HAS INCREASED WHEN THE DEMAND IS HIGH

Numan Dayan, President of Istanbul Halciler Association, said, “Because the weather was hot in the warehouses, the onions sprouted and there were wastage. When the demand was high, the prices went up,” he said.

Onions, which were sold in kilos in the past years, but in sacks, started to burn pockets this year.

The onion, which was kept in warehouses that are not suitable for climatic conditions, went to waste last year with its very easy greening and rotting.

The acceptance of March and April as a transitional period in onions also caused prices to increase.

Currently, the absence of a new harvest has reflected on the onion prices as 18 liras and 30 liras in the market.

‘AFTER HOLIDAY, IT WILL RETURN TO 10-12 TL’

Yetkin Yılmaz, a market tradesman for onions that are harvested once or twice a year, said, “After the feast, the prices go up to 10-12 liras. At the end of the holiday, its sale in the markets is between 15-17 liras. Onion saw a price he had never seen in his life,” he said.

A medium size onion, which is sold at the market for 25 liras per kilo, is equivalent to 5 liras and 25 kuruş. Market shoppers say they never bought onions less than 5 kilos in the past.

SUPPLY DID NOT FIT THE DEMAND

Numan Dayan, President of the Istanbul Halciler Association, said, “I can say that we are having an unfortunate year in terms of onions. We are also disturbed by the fact that onions have reached these prices. When we look at the general vegetable and fruit market, I can say that it is one of the cheapest markets in Turkey. Onions and potatoes are crops harvested once or twice a year. Since the weather was hot in the warehouses, the onions sprouted. There were also fires. When the demand was high, the supply was not met, there was an increase in prices,” he said.

SALES OF 1 TRUCK PER DAY, DROPPED TO 1 TRUCK A WEEK

Shopkeeper Fahrettin Keleş said, “There is a production-related problem. Due to the supply-demand balance, the price rises immediately,” he said.

Market shopkeeper Yetkin Yılmaz said, “The prices at the market are 18-20 liras. The reason is because the production was low this year, the weather conditions went cold and the old onions are gone, almost non-existent. That’s why we can’t get ahead of prices. “The costs are high, the efficiency is low,” he said.

Stating that potato prices are lower than onions, Yılmaz said, “Currently, the price is around 7-8 liras for ten. Because the goods are limited, the producer charges high prices. We have shipping, packaging and billing costs. We just put it in, sell it with a profit of 15-20 cents. If we are selling 1 truck per day, now it has decreased to 1 truck per week.”

BOTH 20 LIRA AND LOW QUALITY

Omer Özata, one of the shopkeepers of the market, said, “Last year there was a lot of onions, there was no demand. It was like this because there was no October this year. Normally onions wouldn’t go to waste. It started to go to waste for 2-3 years. At the moment, the price of onions is 18 liras. But the season is over, now we will start the new season. After the feast, onions will fall because it is planted. It will be in the 7-10 lira band, nothing lower because there will be a loss. You will encourage people so that they will sow.”

Adnan Ergin, who bought onions to sell in his grocery store, said, “Onions are 20 liras, and it’s not good at all. I don’t know what will happen like this, I bought it hard for 20 liras. I’m selling for 23 liras, but I’m not making any money. The onion is already gone, new onions will come out, and that’s 25 liras. Now everyone gets one. Who will buy onions for 30 liras? Onions aren’t good either. We can’t sell it, so I bought a sack,” he said.

‘EVERYONE WHO REACTS GETS USED AFTER’

Güray Akın, who sells the products they buy from the market, said, “As far as we know, it is said that there is no onion in the warehouses. The price increase is due to it. The price of the onion we sell for 25 liras is between 21-22. We buy these coins and put them on top of 2-3 liras and try to sell them like that. Everyone is reacting, but everyone gets used to it, he will get used to it,” he said.

“Prices only stretch with the harvest,” said Akın, adding, “One onion is 5 liras and 25 cents.”

Marketer Talat Alakoç said, “This year’s crop is late. The product inside was also not enough, it ended early. That’s it, no magnification needed. Citizens have a legitimate reaction. Up to 2 weeks, prices drop, new crops appear,” he said.

‘I WAS GAINING 5 KG, NOW 2 KG’

Sema Birgin, who does market shopping, said, “The market is already very expensive. Expensive as we come every week. 2 weeks ago, I bought enough items for an average of 1 week for 400 liras. With my last remaining money, I bought 1 kilo of onions, basic necessities such as greens and cucumbers. In the past, we did not buy onions less than 5 kilos, now I have gained 2 kilos.

A person who came to the market for shopping said, “There is no shopping for less than 500 liras. I bought tomatoes and cucumbers,” he said. (DHA)
