Electricity production from fossil fuels peaked at least 5 years ago in 107 of 215 countries and has been declining since then.

Electricity production from fossil fuels in 107 countries, which constitute 38 percent of global electricity demand, has declined after peaking at least 5 years ago.

According to analysis by London-based energy think tank Ember, production from fossil fuels increased by 1.2 percent on an annual basis in 2022. This increase remained below the average of 1.6 percent in the 2011-2021 period.

Electricity production from fossil fuels peaked at least 5 years ago in 107 of 215 countries and has been declining since then.

DECREASED BY 20 PERCENT IN THE LAST 10 YEARS

Emissions from the electricity sector in these countries, which account for 38 percent of global electricity demand, have decreased by approximately 20 percent in the last 10 years.

As of the 2000s, 78 of these economies began to reduce the share of fossil fuels by increasing their electricity production from clean energy sources.

In countries that account for 50 percent of global electricity demand, electricity production from fossil fuels has declined after peaking at least a year ago.

HORIZONTAL NAVIGATION IN AFRICA

The European Union (EU) is down 30 percent from peak production from fossil fuels, Oceania and the North Americadecreased by 20 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

While electricity production from fossil fuels has followed a horizontal course in Africa, a similar trend has been observed in Latin America and the Caribbean for about 10 years.

The only regions where electricity production from fossil fuels is expected to peak are Asia and the Middle East.

According to Ember, electricity production from fossil fuels is moving towards a peak level globally, and this trend is ushering in a new era in which emissions from the electricity sector will structurally decline.

‘SUCCESS OF WIND AND SOLAR ENERGY’

In his evaluation of the data, Ember Global Analysis Leader Dave Jones stated that electricity production from fossil fuels has decreased in many countries and said, “In many countries, this decrease occurred despite the increase in electricity demand. This is the success of wind and solar energy. In many developing countries, electricity production from fossil fuels is close to peaking. “We are on the verge of a new era in the global electricity sector in which production from fossil fuels declines.” he said.
