Here is the ‘worst period’ in the history of the Republic

Former Undersecretary of Treasury and economist Mahfi Eğilmez discussed the economy of the Republican period in his article titled “100-Year Balance Sheet of the Republican Economy”.

Eğilmez stated that the momentum of success in economic management from the date of proclamation of the Republic until the 1950s could not show continuity.

Eğilmez explained that the per capita income comparison with the World and South Korea clearly reveals this situation. As Eğilmez draws attention, South Korea developed with economic development after a great war and became a high-income country.

National income per capita in South Korea has reached 33,147 dollars. Turkey’s per capita national income completed 2022 at 10,655 dollars.

“EVEN BULGARIA AND ROMANIA PASSED US”

Eğilmez said, “The last five years are the five most unsuccessful years of the Republic period. “Bulgaria and Romania, which started far behind us, have surpassed us in terms of welfare in the last five years,” he said.

According to the Republic’s social report card shared by Eğilmez, Turkey ranked 116th in the Rule of Law index, where 140 countries were compared, while Romania ranked 38th and Bulgaria ranked 68th.

However, it should be noted that while inflation is 8.8 percent in Romania and 6.3 percent in Bulgaria, Turkey is struggling with high inflation at 61.53 percent.

“REPUBLICAN IDEALS ARE ABANDONED”

Eğilmez concluded his article by saying, “Although we describe the last five years of the Republic period as the most unsuccessful period, when we describe this period as a period in which all the social, political and economic accumulations of the past were put aside and the ideals of the Republic were abandoned; He concluded by saying, “The issue of whether it is correct to include it in the Republican period is becoming debatable.”
